MIRIQA® Skin Extra Strength (Clinic Exclusive)- Guide to the “2 in 1” oral sunblock and skin brightening supplement!

By Dr Hoe Ying Min, Medical Director of Bay Aesthetics Clinic

Sun damage, also known as photoaging, is when ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight leads to visible signs of aging in the skin- such as pigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine lines and redness. UV Rays can be subdivided into UV-A and UV-B Rays- UV-A rays are lower energy with a higher wavelength and penetrate to the deeper layer of skin- causing premature skin ageing ("A for Ageing"). UV-B rays have higher energy and shorter wavelength compared to UV-A rays, and affect the superficial layer of the skin- causing sunburn ("B for Burn"). Both UV-A and UV-B exposure are linked to skin cancer development. When skin cells are exposed to UV radiation, they undergo oxidative stress, with free radicals causing DNA damage. This accelerates the aging process of skin cells, leading to loss of collagen and elastin and the development of pigmentation and skin cancers.

Lifestyle changes to avoid UV radiation would be important- avoid using tanning beds, avoid doing outdoor sports during periods of high UV radiation (ie midday), wear UV protective clothing (including face mask and hat). Topical and oral sunblock forms the last line of defence to neutralise UV rays- for topical sunblocks, look for a product with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 50 or above, with PA (Protection Grade) ++++ representing very high protection. Those with sensitive, acne prone skin or melasma would benefit from a mineral sunscreen (containing iron oxide, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide).

Oral sunblocks are skin health supplements that contain ingredients to neutralise the effects of UV Rays that penetrate the skin. Apart from preventing sunburn and reducing the risk of skin cancers, oral sunblocks may also lighten the skin tone and improve pigmentary disorders.

The key ingredient in oral sunblocks is Polypodium Leucotomos Extract (PLE). Sourced from a South American Fern, published clinical research has shown that PLE has antioxidant and photoprotective properties1 and when taken orally- preventing sunburn and delaying photoageing.

Why would one need oral sunblock if they already use a topical sunblock? Oral sunblock acts as the "goalkeeper", preventing the "attackers" (UV rays) that make it past the "defenders" (topical sunblock) from scoring a goal against your skin
